What it does

The work Laundry and Dry Cleaning takes off your desk on an ordinary day.

01

What arrived on it, before any machine touched it

The stain on the cuff, the tear at the hem, the button that was already missing — written down at the counter while the customer is still standing there, photographed, and kept in different columns from anything that happens in your care. That record is what settles the conversation three days later, and it is worth nothing if it is taken afterwards.

02

A tag on every garment, not one on the bundle

A thobe, a ghutra, an abaya and a bisht handed over together are four rows and four tags, each with its colour, its cloth and its brand. A jacket can come back to the rail before its trousers do, and the counter still knows exactly what is missing.

03

A thobe is not a price — “a thobe, washed and ironed” is

The price book is the cross of your two lists: the things a customer hands over by the things you do to them. Silk multiplies what the cross says, an XL curtain multiplies that, express multiplies the whole ticket, and the flat charge for handling leather sits outside the rush. The clerk can read the arithmetic out loud, in Arabic, to the customer who asks why it is eighteen riyals.

04

The promised date is a column, not a habit

The date the customer was told is stored once, at the counter, and printed on the receipt. The slowest thing in the bundle decides it — a bisht takes a day longer than a shirt and the app already knows that — and it is never quietly moved afterwards. So “what is late” is a query on a board, not an argument at the counter.

05

A ready bundle has an address

Rail A1, the slot, and the day it was hung there. Find it by tag or by phone number — “3312 3456”, “+974 3312 3456” and “٣٣١٢٣٤٥٦” all reach the same household — and hand it over in seconds instead of walking the rails.

06

The cloth that can ruin a garment stops the counter

Silk, chiffon, leather and suede each carry their care note in both languages and a risk level. A high-risk piece is not accepted until the clerk has recorded that the customer was told — a line in the file, not a promise somebody remembers.

07

Ready and reminder messages, and the rail nobody came back to

WhatsApp when it is ready, a reminder on the schedule you set, and it stops after the number of reminders you allow. Every attempt is a row, so “we messaged you three times” is a fact rather than a claim — and then the uncollected list: what has been hanging since March, and for how long.

08

The van’s round, and the money it comes back with

One driver, one vehicle, a list of doors, and the time window each customer was promised. Cash collected at the door is counted against the stops the driver actually finished, so the round reconciles itself before anybody goes home.

09

Your catalogue is already written, in both languages

Thobe, ghutra, bisht, abaya, shayla, curtains, carpets and a bag of washing by the kilo; wash and iron, iron only, dry clean, starch, stain work; eight cloths with their care notes. The price book offers the whole list the first time you open it empty — one click — and then every number, every name and every Arabic word is yours to change.
